What is the difference between using VIN/GND and P+/P- for energy supply?

Oh sorry, forgot to tell. The board I’m using is the Sparkfun’s one: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11400

The only difference is that the P+/P- pads have a reverse voltage protection circuit in place. When you use VIN, you are feeding directly into the 3V3 regulator.

So is it ok to use the P+/P- pads with 4 AA (6V) batteries? Or should I use GND/VIN?

Yes, 4AA will work just fine, and the P+,P- pads are your safest option, but both places will work because they both go to the same place.
